The Nissan Xterra comes in several trims — X, S, Off Road and SE. All come in either two- or four-wheel drive with the exception of the four-wheel-drive-only Off Road model.
Standard equipment on the Xterra X includes 16-inch steel wheels, rear tinted glass, roof rails, cruise control, keyless entry, power windows and locks, a tilt steering wheel, air-conditioning and a six-speaker stereo with a CD player.
The Xterra S adds 16-inch alloy wheels, upgraded tires, foglamps, step rails, roof rail crossbars, roof gear basket, power mirrors, an eight-way manually adjustable driver seat, rubber-floor cargo area and a dead pedal.
The Nissan Xterra offers plenty of room, a good stereo, and easy-to-clean rubber mats that everyone praises. The Xterra shines for its versatile cargo capacity. It provides 65.7 cubic feet with the second row folded down and 36.3 cubic feet with all seats in use.
It also provides more cargo features than most SUVs. These include luggage side nets, four ceiling hooks and two side hooks and under-floor cargo area storage. All but the base model also include an Easy Clean cargo area and an Utili-track Cargo Channel System with four adjustable cleats. A 2010 Nissan Xterra 2WD with the manual transmission turns in an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 16 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. Mileage for 4WD and automatic transmissions varies only slightly.
The 2010 Nissan Xterra is equipped with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Xterra Off Road models also come with hill descent control and hill start assist.
In crash testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Xterra earned four out of five stars for frontal impact protection and a perfect five out of five stars for side impacts. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Xterra its highest rating of “Good” for both frontal and side impact protection.
